2014 Holiday Shopping Guide!

We’re just a few weeks away from Christmas. Everyone’s freaking out about last-minute gift ideas, and a lot of authors I know are scrambling to get just a few more sales by the end of the year. So I thought, Hey, why not help out some folks I know? And that’s how this post came into being.

Full disclosure: I haven’t had an opportunity to read every single title here, but I’m familiar enough with their authors to vouch for their books. Most of these titles are by lesser-known writers, and several of them are my friends or acquaintances. Furthermore, not all of them are horror. Please don’t let that discourage you from adding them to your shopping list. I’ve tried to include something here for everyone, no matter what your reading preferences may be (yes, I’ve even included romance).

Clicking on a book’s cover will take you to the Kindle version, but I’ve notated when there are paperback equivalents available. Some of these authors have extensive catalogs and I encourage you to check them out.

Anyway, I’ll shut up now. Take a look. See if there’s something that strikes your fancy. . .

TroyBlackford

Sammy is a man with problems. Most of the time, he doesn’t remember what day it is, what town he lives in, or even what he’s doing on a day-to-day basis. Sammy’s worst problem is that all his other problems are his own fault. He’s twenty-six, has no job, and lives with his mom – and he spends all his efforts trying to hide his dark secrets from the world… and from himself. One day, during a routine trip to commit mail fraud, his life takes a turn for the weird. What is for him a normal morning becomes the strangest situation he has ever faced: and it only snowballs from there.

But is his day merely strange, or is it a ‘Strange Way Out?’

Along the way, he meets a new friend, is forced to confront his darkest secrets, and faced with a choice: keep his secrets inside, to rot him from the inside out, or expose his truth for the world to see and judge.

A fight for survival in every sense – physical, emotional, and spiritual – ‘Strange Way Out’ is a story of one young man’s dawning realization that he has a part to play in his own life, and his struggle to find the courage to play that part as best he can, for better or worse, in the face of seemingly unnatural terrors and all too human threats to his existence.

Since the beginning of civilization the Church of Midnight has attempted to open the gateway and unite with its other half, the Church of Morning. Each year they’ve come closer, waiting for the ideal sacrifice to open the gateway permanently.

This year that sacrifice has come. And only two can protect it. Martin and Teresa are the nomads, battle-hardened people who lack identity and are forever road-bound on an endless mission to guard the sacrifice. Their only direction is from notes left from a mysterious person called the Messenger. Thomas Ligotti – Songs of a Dead Dreamer

Kindle: $6.99

ThomasLigotti

Songs of a Dreamer was Thomas Ligotti’s first collection of supernatural horror stories. When originally published in 1985 by Harry Morris’s Silver Scarab Press, the book was hardly noticed. In 1989, an expanded version appeared that garnered accolades from several quarters. Writing in the Washington Post, the celebrated science fiction and fantasy author Michael Swanwick extolled: ‘Put this volume on the shelf right between H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe. Where it belongs.’

The revisions in the present volume of Songs of a Dead Dreamer have been calculated to make its stories into enhanced incarnations of the originals. This edition is and will remain definitive.

For those already familiar with the stories in Songs of a Dead Dreamer, an invitation is extended to return to them in their ultimate state. For those new to the collection, it is submitted to engage them with some of the most extraordinary tales of their kind. In either case, this publication of Songs of a Dead Dreamer offers evidence for why Ligotti has been judged to be among the most important authors in the history of supernatural horror.

Elisa Lorello – Friends of Mine: Thirty Years in the Life of a Duran Duran Fan

Kindle: $3.99 | Also available in paperback.

ElisaLorello

Elisa Lorello’s lifelong love affair with Duran Duran began like that of many other fans: staying up late watching MTV, plastering her bedroom walls with glossy posters and magazine pinups, and writing secret stories about someday becoming Mrs. John Taylor. But waiting in the darkness was a life that held more than she bargained for.

Battling a negative self-image, self-imposed isolation, and troubled relationships, Elisa eventually unlocked the strength to free her and become the teacher and bestselling novelist she was meant to be. And she discovered that her Duran Duran fandom—and the power of music—was the key.

Using her signature blend of humor and heartstring tugging, Elisa transports readers back to a time of synthesizers and shoulder pads, fedoras and Ferris Bueller, leather pants and Live Aid. Much more than a fan letter, Friends of Mine: Thirty Years in the Life of a Duran Duran Fan is a collection of stories about growing up in 1980s suburbia. It’s about first loves, first losses, divorce, Generation X, family, and friendship—all set to the soundtrack of the original Fab Five.

If the rumors are true, her mother was the hated pathologist who released the disease in the first place, leading to the destruction of government, civilization, and life as we know it.

Despite the constant terror of the undead, Jenny is as happy as a post-apocalyptic girl can be. She has friends, she’s good with a knife, and she has Declan Munro by her side. But when she hears her brother might still be alive and living with the Underground, a religious group hiding in the now-defunct subway, Jenny jumps at the chance to find him. She infiltrates the group to right the wrong she caused when she ran away, leaving him in that lab.

When she finds him, though, Casey is not at all what she expected. He’s been turned. And the impossible happens when Jenny is bitten. She and Casey are dead, but they’re not like any other rotters. Their minds are still intact. And there are others: Thirteen children survived the mysterious experiments, and it’s up to Jenny to find them and bring an end to the plague. But not everyone wants the chaos to end.

James Newman – Animosity

Kindle: $5.99 | Also available in paperback.

JamesNewman

Animosity is the story of Andrew Holland, a bestselling horror writer whose life begins to mirror the fictional nightmares of his novels after he finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Andy’s wife recently left him for another man. To keep from getting too depressed about that, Andy has thrown himself into his writing more vigorously than ever, when he’s not spending as much time with his daughter, Samantha, as joint custody allows. His neighbors seem proud to know him (although none of them would admit to reading “that kind of stuff”). The author is the closest thing to a celebrity most of Poinsettia Lane’s residents will ever meet.
Everything changes, however, the day Andy discovers the body of a murdered child just several hundred yards from his front door.

Almost instantly, his neighbors start to turn on him. Though the authorities clear him of any wrongdoing, as weeks pass with no arrest the local media insinuates connections between the gruesome subject matter of Andy’s novels and his tragic discovery. His neighbors’ derision is subtle at first – a nasty look, a friendly wave that is not reciprocated. Ben Souther, with whom Andy once enjoyed cold beers and baseball banter on warm summer nights, offers the writer advice which now hints of something more unsettling than the sly wisdom normally found in his quotes-for-every-occasion: “Let us not make imaginary evils when we have so many real ones to encounter”.

His neighbors soon take their disdain to a frightening new level. His phone rings, and when he answers muffled voices curse him, spitting vile accusations. They vandalize his home, trash his vehicle.

And just when he thinks things can’t possibly get any worse, another child’s body is found.

Andy is no longer sure if he will survive this ordeal with his sanity intact…assuming he does survive.

Animosity is a disturbing look into how otherwise good people can allow themselves to be misled by gossip, rumors, and a mob mentality. It is a retelling of the “The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street” for the modern age, a morality-play-meets-horror-story in which the monsters wear all-too-familiar faces. Rather than bloodthirsty vampires or brain-eating zombies beating at the door, they are our own friends, our families, our peers…and what in any horror writer’s twisted imagination could be more terrifying?
