Executive decisions.

Good evening, folks.

A lot’s going on at the moment, and I suspect it won’t slow down until sometime closer to the holidays. However, I do have a few days of reprieve, so I figured it would be a good time to catch up on other things – like this blog.

My preoccupation with all things ALT-related has been well documented. On Sunday night I finished the 2nd round of revisions, a culmination of lunch breaks, late weeknights, and lost weekends. Most of ALT has been re-written. It lost some weight in the transition – more than I can accurately measure, as some of it was replaced with leaner, more valuable material. All in all, it’s approximately 7k words shorter than its original draft. Secondary characters have a little more face time. I think it’s a little darker. The villain is a bit clearer. There’s more of a climax. And I think it sets up the next book rather well.

I estimate I rewrote about 75% of the book. More than I expected to. Earlier changes dictated even more changes later on, creating a snowball effect of revision. The story and its message are the same. You’ll find the same characters doing the same things – but with a little more dimension, I think. I approached this as a kind of “director’s cut,” without the commentary (You get plenty of that here). This new version includes things I didn’t think to flesh out 4 years ago – and things I didn’t have the confidence to address.

No word on a release date yet. I sent the manuscript to my editor yesterday for a third pass, seeing as how she hasn’t seen most of what I’ve been working on. I wanted to have this thing finished before Thanksgiving, but I do not know if that is possible. Yesterday I was faced with a decision to either rush this thing to production, or take some more time, make sure all the wrinkles are ironed out, and release it when it’s ready. It was an executive decision, of sorts, and I suspect it won’t be the only one I’ll ever have to make.

Right now the plan is to have this done before Christmas. It may not take that long. Once it’s finished, I’m taking a short hiatus from anything ALT-related to work on another project. I intend to reconvene with my editor in the Spring to begin editing THE LIMINAL MAN, with an intended release in the Fall of 2011.

Recently I’ve alluded to something else in the works. I’m happy to say it will soon be announced. I’ve spent the last several months planning it, and the last several years dreaming about it. It’s almost ready. It’s not a huge thing–it may not mean anything to you–but it is full of possibility and promise. You will see very soon.

In the non-writing world, where I’m a mild-mannered normal (weird) guy, I was recently offered a full time position at my day job. It’s something I’ve been working toward for almost three years, and it will be nice to have a return to stability.

Okay. I think that’s about it for now. We’ll all sit down and talk soon.

P.S. I’m looking to pick up the Word Machines features again. If anyone has a recommendation (and yes, you can recommend yourself), email me.
